Year in Review: 2024
Reflecting on 2024, it’s impossible to ignore the challenges we faced:
- A Renewed Opioid Crisis Public Health Emergency: In June 2024, the opioid crisis escalated to a national public health emergency, underscoring the ongoing battle against addiction and its devastating impact.
- A Divisive Election: The historic election left families deeply divided. Time Magazine described this phenomenon as an “estrangement epidemic,” with 1 in 2 adults reporting estrangement from a close relative. Political differences were cited as the cause in 1 in 5 cases, amplifying the fractures within our communities.
- Record-High Fentanyl Seizures: The DEA reported unprecedented levels of fentanyl seizures, highlighting the shift from plant-based drugs like heroin and cocaine to synthetic substances like fentanyl and methamphetamine. This change has driven the United States into the most dangerous and deadly drug crisis in its history.
- Rising Costs of Living: From soaring home prices and interest rates to a 28% increase in grocery costs since 2019, financial pressures have intensified for individuals and communities alike.
- Climate Extremes: Intense storms, devastating fires, and mounting concerns about the future have left many feeling as though they’re living in a dystopian narrative.
Despite these harsh realities, our resilience shines through. At Visalia Recovery Center, we remain united in our commitment to support our community. With strength and solidarity, 2024 also brought moments of hope, connection, and celebration:
The Jonah & Travis Drug Awareness Fund Dinner.
This heartfelt event honored the memories of Jonah and Travis, who tragically lost their lives to accidental fentanyl poisoning. The fund, based in Visalia, California, is dedicated to preventing further fentanyl-related deaths. It offers education and support to those battling addiction, their families, friends, and the wider community. Together, we aim to combat the fentanyl crisis and foster healing.
PRIDE Visalia.
Organized by The Source, PRIDE Visalia is a vibrant, grassroots celebration of diversity, inclusion, and acceptance. This family-friendly event welcomes LGBTQ+ individuals and allies alike, offering food trucks, vendors, exhibits, entertainment, a Kid’s Zone, and educational opportunities. Each year, it creates a judgment-free space where everyone in the community can feel at home.
Partnership with Visalia Chamber of Commerce.
This past year, Visalia Recovery Center was excited to join other local businesses in our community by becoming Visalia Chamber of Commerce members.
As we close out the year, we’re grateful for our community, the hardships we overcame and lessons we’ve learned, and the great new things coming in 2025—which will include a new location in Visalia. Happy New Year and stay tuned!
